When it comes to taking still life photos, your background is the foundation of the image. Maybe you have an Etsy shop, or a website where you sell a product, and need to take photos for your shop. Let’s talk about backgrounds….

See multiple backgrounds used here.
For my still life, flatlays/stock photos, I most commonly use foam boards, papers and vinyl backgrounds. I tend to like my backgrounds to be lighter, and not so busy or distracting, so the product or props are the main focus, but there are SO MANY things you can use that you may have just floating around the house.
Papers (from construction paper, kraft paper, to wrapping paper or even wallpaper!), Cardboard (paint it!), material (sheets, blankets, linens, etc), wooden boards (like beadboard or plywood), floormats, woven placemats, tiles… the list is endless!
I usually get my foam boards and paper at Hobby Lobby or Michael’s, but you can get simple foam boards at Amazon too!
There are some really cool professional backgrounds you can buy that are high quality and long lasting.
My favorites are Barb Brookbank, Replica Surfaces, Bessie Bakes Backdrops, and Backdrop.woodville.

Have any questions? Are there any colors or backgrounds you’d like to see more of?
